English is important, contrary to popular Malaysians belief. Thankfully I paid attention during English classes. I had a tough time learning the lingo but it's worth it in the end. Because I speak better English, I get more opportunities than some of my friends. Don't take English lightly, not if you wanna go far.
At least know the basics, s'long as you're able to hold a conversation without popping a vein.
True, mother tongue is number one but...
